Free tools for small nonprofits: grants, donor thank-yous and volunteer reminders

Three jobs eat a small team's week: finding grants, thanking donors quickly, and making sure volunteers show up. Here is what each Bytekind tool does on its free plan, what it does not do, and when a different kind of tool is the better fit.

Grant Finder: a free grant finder for small nonprofits

What it does: tell it about your mission and it ranks open grants by how well they fit, then drafts a first letter of inquiry to the funder.

What it covers: open federal grants for every state, plus state agency and community foundation grants in Missouri and California. More states are coming.

What it does not do: it does not write your final application or promise an award. Outside Missouri and California, check your state agencies and local community foundation directly too.

Pick something else if: you need a full grant management system that tracks reports, budgets and deadlines across a large portfolio.

Donor Thank-You: a donor thank-you letter tool

What it does: log a gift (or import a spreadsheet on Plus), get a warm, personal thank-you note written for it, edit anything you like, approve it, and send it by email. You can try it first with sample gifts.

What it does not do: nothing goes out until you approve it, and it is not a donor database. Plus adds unlimited notes, CSV import, saved templates and your logo.

Pick something else if: you need a full donor management system (CRM) with giving history, pledges, receipts and campaign reporting.

Volunteer Reminders: a volunteer reminder tool for nonprofits

What it does: set up an event and its shifts, share a signup link, and volunteers get an email confirmation plus reminders three days before and the day before. If someone cancels or does not confirm, it drafts a fill-in note that you approve before it goes out. Volunteers do not need an account.

What it does not do: reminders go by email, not text message, and it is not a full volunteer management system.

Pick something else if: you need text message reminders, background checks, hour tracking for grants, or scheduling across many sites.
